I subscribed to at least 2 golf magazines from the early 1980's onward and being a scientist and data nerd myself, loved reading his articles and theories. I recall that Dave established that the perfect holing speed for a putt is one that rolls exactly 17 inches past the cup. I got out my tape measure, and put tape on the shaft of my putter exactly 17 inches from the head so that when I practiced, I could gauge how perfect (more often, imperfect) my speed was. Me and a fried would spend lunch breaks at a nearby course on the putting green. Our favorite game was "Safety Drawback" where if you left a putt short of the hole, you had to draw it back a putter length before your next putt, but past the hole and within 17 inches was in the Safety Zone. What an incredible mind Mr. Pelz had and the game of golf and the world is missing a true pioneer and creative force.
