A Tribute to
Dave Pelz

Master of the SCORING game

1939-2025

Remembering Dave Pelz

Thank you for taking time to join us in paying tribute to a man whose name is synonymous with innovation, insight, and excellence in the game of golf—Dave Pelz. More than just a teacher or researcher, Pelz redefined how the golf world views the short game, elevating the science and strategy behind it to levels never before imagined.

Pelz attended Indiana University on a four-year golf scholarship, majoring in physics with minors in mathematics, philosophy and astronomy.

He then spent 14 years as a National Aeronautics and Space Administration research scientist at Goddard Space Flight Center, conducting experiments on the atmospheres of the earth and other planets. Chosen by NASA as a “Principle Investigator,” Pelz led international space research programs with both the Italian (San Marcos Satellites) and German (AEROS Satellites) governments for NASA. In 1975, he left NASA to begin a full-time career in golf research and development.

Through his groundbreaking research and coaching, Pelz shed light on the importance of the short game—an area that accounts for the majority of strokes yet had long been overlooked. His work didn’t just change the mindset of casual players; it transformed the careers of some of golf’s greatest champions. From Phil Mickelson to Patrick Reed, the list of players who have benefitted from Pelz’s wisdom is a testament to the power of his insights.

Pelz’s best-selling books, like “Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible” and “Putting Bible,” have become sacred texts for golfers around the world. His deep desire to help players reach their full potential led to the creation of the Dave Pelz Scoring Game Schools.

But beyond the accolades, beyond the stats and success stories, Pelz’s legacy lies in the way he made the game more accessible, more understandable, and more enjoyable for millions. His ability to blend technical mastery with human connection made him not just a coach, but a mentor, an innovator, and an enduring inspiration.

As we honor the life and lessons of Dave Pelz, we celebrate not just what he achieved, but also the spirit with which he did it: with curiosity, humility, and, perhaps most importantly, the enthusiasm of one who truly loves the game. Dave coached countless times: “Hold Your Finish. It’s the best way you can watch and learn from the shot you just hit.” In golf and life, you watched and learned and taught us all. You finished well, Dave. Thank you.
